Gravitational waves from coalescing neutron stars encode information about nuclear matter at extreme densities, inaccessible by laboratory experiments. The late inspiral is influenced by the presence of tides, which depend on the neutron star equation of state. Neutron star mergers are expected to often produce rapidly rotating remnant neutron stars that emit gravitational waves. These will provide clues to the extremely hot post-merger environment. This signature of nuclear matter in gravitational waves contains most information in the 2–4 kHz frequency band, which is outside of the most sensitive band of current detectors. We present the design concept and science case for a Neutron Star Extreme Matter Observatory (NEMO): a gravitational-wave interferometer optimised to study nuclear physics with merging neutron stars. The concept uses high-circulating laser power, quantum squeezing, and a detector topology specifically designed to achieve the high-frequency sensitivity necessary to probe nuclear matter using gravitational waves. Above 1 kHz, the proposed strain sensitivity is comparable to full third-generation detectors at a fraction of the cost. Such sensitivity changes expected event rates for detection of post-merger remnants from approximately one per few decades with two A+ detectors to a few per year and potentially allow for the first gravitational-wave observations of supernovae, isolated neutron stars, and other exotica.

The seventh annual Teaching and Learning Conference (TLC) was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from February 5 to 7, 2010, with 224 attendees onsite. The theme for the meeting was “Advancing Excellence in Teaching Political Science.” Using the working-group model, the TLC track format encourages in-depth discussion and debate on research dealing with the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Background
This study compared the efficacy and safety of sertraline to placebo in treating panic disorder.
Method178 out-patients with panic disorder who exhibited at least four panic attacks during the four weeks prior to screening and three during the two weeks of lead-in were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of double-blind treatment with sertraline (50, 100 or 200 mg) or placebo.
ResultsSertraline was superior to placebo in reducing the number of panic attacks, situational attacks, unexpected attacks, limited symptom attacks, and time spent worrying (all P < 0.01) and the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (P < 0.05), although Clinical Global Impression (Improvement) did not significantly differentiate groups at 12 weeks and at end-point. No serious adverse events were associated with sertraline. No dose relationship was found for adverse events; overall drop-out rates were not different for sertraline or placebo, although more sertraline-treated subjects discontinued for adverse events, typically early in the study. Only dry mouth and ejaculation failure (primarily ejaculation delay) were associated significantly with sertraline. Conclusions Sertraline was effective and safe in reducing panic attacks. Higher doses were no more effective than the 50 mg dose.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha power has been demonstrated to be inversely related to mental activity and has subsequently been used as an indirect measure of brain activation. The thalamus has been proposed as an important site for modulation of rhythmic alpha activity. Studies in animals have suggested that cortical alpha rhythms are correlated with alpha rhythms in the thalamus. However, little empirical evidence exists for this relation in humans. In the current study, resting EEG and a fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography scan were measured during the same experimental session. Over a 30-min period, average EEG alpha power across 28 electrodes from 27 participants was robustly inversely correlated with glucose metabolic activity in the thalamus. These data provide the first evidence for a relation between alpha EEG power and thalamic activity in humans.

Cold cathodes have been fabricated using two different nitride structures as a thin film emitting layer. The A1N and graded AlGaN structures are prepared by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on an n-type 6H-SiC substrate. Individual aluminum grids are perforated with an array of either 1, 3, or 5μm holes through which the emitting surface is exposed. After device fabrication, a hydrogen plasma exposure was found to be necessary to activate the cathode. The devices have displayed a limited lifetime and a small percentage of the devices operate, although half of the devices with 5μm holes functioned. The highest measured collector currents are 0.1μA for A1N and l0nA for AlGaN at grid voltages of 110V and 20V, respectively. The grid currents are typically 10 to 104 times the collector currents.

Highly localized metal deposits can be produced at low temperature by direct writing using a focused laser beam to induce photodissociation of gaseous organometallic precursors. The deposition rate and localization of the deposit are influenced by the kinetics of photochemical reaction and transport of reactants and products. Two-dimensional finite-element computations were performed to determine the effect of deposition parameters, such as laser power, precursor concentration, system pressure, and sticking coefficient, on deposition rates and deposit profiles resulting from single-photon gas-phase dissociation of organometallic precursors. The effect of various gas-phase transport regimes and the conditions and importance of reactant depletion have been investigated. Numerical results have also been compared to theoretical and experimental results from the literature.
